DENVER'S PROFESSIONAL COMPENSATION SYSTEM
http://denverprocomp.org/
The Denver Public School system has designed an ambitious new salary system where educators are rewarded for demonstrating gains in student achievement. What began as a four-year pilot project, with full support of the Denver Classroom Teachers Association (DCTA), has become a new system-wide salary schedule to reward high-performing teachers. The DCTA and the school board approved a new systemic teacher compensation system in March 2004. In November 2005, Denver voters approved a $25 million mill levy to fund the new compensation system. The Broad Foundation has since added to its initial investment to assist the district with this new compensation system over the next two years.
MILKEN NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING
http://www.tapschools.org/
The National Institute for Excellence in Teaching (NIET), formerly the Teacher Advancement Program (TAP), is a business- and research-based school improvement effort to attract, retain and motivate the best talent to the teaching profession. NIET, a model that can be used by school districts, consists of four key elements: multiple career paths; ongoing, applied professional growth; instructionally focused accountability; and performance-based compensation. The Broad Foundation supports the implementation and growth of NIET in two urban districts. The first district, Minneapolis, launched the program in five schools during the 2005-06 school year and will embark in three more schools in the 2006-07 school year.
UFT CHARTER SCHOOL INITIATIVE
The Broad Foundation supports the start-up of the United Federation of Teachers' (UFT) first union-run charter schools in New York City. The UFT Elementary Charter School opened its doors in the fall of 2005 with 150 students in kindergarten and first grade. The school will grow one grade per year until it serves students from kindergarten through fifth grade. The UFT will also open the UFT Secondary Charter School in the fall of 2006, serving 125 students in grade 6. The secondary school will add a grade each year until it serves students from grades 6 through 12.
BIOGRAPHY OF ALBERT SHANKER
The Broad Foundation supports the efforts of Richard Kahlenberg, currently a Senior Fellow at The Century Foundation, to research and write a biography on the late union leader Albert Shanker.
INSTITUTE FOR PROGRESSIVE TEACHER UNION LEADERSHIP
The Broad Foundation supports the start-up efforts of the Institute for Progressive Teacher Union Leadership, a national professional development initiative for teacher union leaders.
